CSS newsgroups

The primary newsgroup for CSS for the World Wide Web is comp.infosystems.www.authoring.stylesheets (CIWAS). Subscribe, read the FAQ and lurk a while before posting. Regulars worth reading include the FAQ maintainer, Jan Roland Eriksson, Alan J. Flavell, Rijk van Geijtenbeek, Jukka K. Korpela, Matt McIrvin, Eric A. Meyer and Etan Wexler. Also watch for occasional postings by David Baron, Bert Bos and Todd Fahrner.

The Mozilla group for style matters is netscape.public.mozilla.style, and for Opera opera.page-authoring includes discussion of CSS and often has input from Opera staff, including Sue Sims, as well as some CIWAS regulars.

HTML newsgroups

The main newsgroup for HTML for the World Wide Web is comp.infosystems.www.authoring.html (CIWAH). Read the FAQ and lurk a while before posting. Regulars worth reading include original author of the FAQ, Stan Brown, Jan Roland Eriksson, Alan J. Flavell, Rijk van Geijtenbeek, Nick Kew, Jukka K. Korpela, Ian Graham, Darin McGrew, Arjun Ray and Etan Wexler.

The alternative newsgroup for HTML is alt.html, which is a little more loose than CIWAH in its charter and its collective outlook, and tends to tolerate newbie questions more readily. Still, it's worth reading the FAQ before posting.

For Opera-specific HTML discussion, see opera.page-authoring and for Netscape, netscape.public.dev.html.

Java newsgroups

The primary newsgroup for Java is comp.lang.java.programmer. As usual, lurk and read the FAQ first. For servlet related issues watch out for regular posters Simon Brooke, Phil Hanna and Jon Skeet, who is proposing a new group comp.lang.java.servlets to separate servlet related discussion.

Other Java groups which may be of interest include comp.lang.java.javascript, a low traffic alternative to comp.lang.javascript, and comp.lang.java.databases.

Javascript newsgroups

The main newsgroup for Javascript is comp.lang.javascript, but it's a very high traffic group with a lot of "noise" so you will need a good news reader. With the amount of traffic already present, it pays to read the FAQ first and search for previous posts on your topic; it's very likely to have been discussed previously. Regular posters worth reading include the FAQ maintainer Jim Ley, and Martin Honnen.

The comp.lang.java.javascript group is a low-traffic alternative limited to Java related Javascript issues.

If you can't find a public server for the feed you want, Dissenter has a searchable catalogue of dozens of servers and thousands of groups.

See Anchor Points: Code Style for a digest of links from the site log.
