The Code Style site has evolved by gradual refinement and accumulation of features and content. This review is part of a fully backdated site log and archive that sheds light on when, why and how particular features were implemented.

This log is sometimes updated several times per week, sometimes with a long overdue backlog of items. Many log entries refer to the Code Style Java package that delivers the servlet services and utilities used to manage this site.

Reverse chronology

15th August 2000

Added a basic custom 404 error page and mopped up all references to pre-Code Style stylesheets. Changed the /css1/ directory to the more generic /css/ and updated all references.

12th & 14th August 2000

Renamed all standard stylesheets and re-configured the link elements to supplement the main screen style with print and projection styles, rather than use stand-alone stylesheets, i.e. media="screen, projection, print" with additional print- and projection-only media links.

N.B. Internet Explorer 3 incorrectly loads the projection and print styles and apparently renders the last stylesheet to load. The final rendered stylesheet may be the largest, CSStandard.css at approximately 7KB, but the actual outcome is somewhat erratic and may result in exceptionally large text if the projection stylesheet is rendered. Reloading the page usually clears this problem.

9th August 2000

Re-ordered the div layout to put .Sidebar after main content and float .Content right. Now makes a more attractive and logical page structure for non-CSS browsers and puts content first for indexing spiders.

N.B. The margin-right: declaration for p, ul and ol is no longer rendered correctly by Netscape 4 unless a hr is included in the .Content div.

7th August 2000

Developed media dependent print and projection stylesheets debugged them for IE3, which reads all linked styles.

6th August 2000

Completed conversion to new Code Style format; corrected document titles and article texts, etc and stripped-out all un-used style declarations and created a standard style include file. Re-tested all Flash object test pages and re-organised results table, with various minor adjustments to article markup. Refined Style Warning page.

4th August 2000

Added a new /codestyle/ directory, About Code Style index page and moved What's New and feedback acknowledgement page into it.

Started building the Previously... archive of What's New information with an SSI menu.

3rd August 2000

Converted all existing pages to the new markup with the Header class div and corrected all outstanding validation errors. XHTML format meta element includes removed from HTML 4 pages.

Made a clear division between XHTML 1.0 Strict and HTML 4 Transitional trial pages in Flash object article, corrected Java object markup to use classid element and removed all redundant and inappropriate pages.

Removed all references to non-indexed style directories.

2nd August 2000

Added a new RgtBox class for right-aligned, floating box-out content, designed to sit in the right-hand margin of the main content area. Declaration split between standard and imported stylesheet to avoid problems with Netscape 4. N.B. Still causes an erratic loss of text-align: justify in main text.

Added a new Rule class for block level elements to use in place of hr elements. Same style also applied to feedback ID.

Added new browser version and operating system fields to general feedback form.

Added What's New page to standard sidebar include file.

Previously on Code Style

These backdated pages record detailed changes to the Code Style Web site since July 2000, when development first got underway. Some pages may refer to documents or features that have since changed or are no longer part of the site, but the archive is checked to ensure there are no dead links.
