November 2007 on Code Style

The Code Style site has evolved by gradual refinement and accumulation of features and content. This review is part of a fully backdated site log and archive that sheds light on when, why and how particular features were implemented.

This log is sometimes updated several times per week, sometimes with a long overdue backlog of items. Many log entries refer to the Code Style Java package that delivers the servlet services and utilities used to manage this site.

Reverse chronology

Premium content mailing list options, 22^nd November 2007

Re-generated mailing list subscription table includes to add the premium content service, plus relevant additions to mailing list form template. Updated the MailingListTemplate class to create a new include file for the FAQ section and made a minor adjustment to the format of the markup.

FAQ backlog published, 17^th November 2007

Cleared a backlog of FAQ answers, including a number of more extensive premium content items.

Font survey update, 10^th November 2007

Latest updates to the Code Style font survey results:

• Windows font survey results

• Unix family font survey results
• Combined survey results for all platforms

Font survey applet server port bug, 3^rd November 2007

Corrected a non-critical bug in the FontSurveyApplet class where the HTTP server URL was effectively hard coded with the default port 80. Introduced a new getPort() method to identify a non-default port number on the applet codebase URL and insert in the confirmation page URLs if necessary. Also added extra debugging statements to the getHost() method to distinguish possible error cases, and new debug parameter handling to output survey script response to the Java console.
